Calculate the Full Cost Before You Buy
A promotional evaluation price is only one part of your prop firm total cost. Your bill can also include renewals, resets or replacement evaluations, activation, platform subscriptions, and market data. Some charges are paid upfront; others reduce a later payout.
Compare the exact plan, account size, platform, and trading stage. Two $50K accounts from the same firm can have different fees and rules. The advertised balance is not a cash deposit you receive, and passing an evaluation does not automatically mean you trade live capital.
This guide explains how to build a budget without relying on a price table that becomes outdated after the next promotion. Billing examples below are illustrative unless a specific official source is identified. Provider terms were reviewed on September 4, 2026.
If you are new to evaluations, start with what is a prop firm.
The Costs to Record
| Cost | What to check | When it can apply |
|---|---|---|
| Initial evaluation or direct-funded purchase | Exact plan and size; eligible discount code; any purchase limits | At checkout |
| Renewal | Billing period, renewal price, cancellation rules, and whether the introductory discount continues | Each billing period until the subscription ends |
| Reset or replacement evaluation | Whether a reset exists, what it resets, and whether it changes the billing date | If you choose another attempt |
| Activation or funded-stage setup | The selected plan's fee, any waiver conditions, and whether it is deducted from a payout | After qualification or at withdrawal |
| Platform and market data | Included data level, exchange subscriptions, platform charges, and professional status | During evaluation or funded trading, depending on the agreement |
| Trading and payout charges | Commissions, exchange/NFA fees, payout processing, and currency conversion | When trading or receiving funds |
Keep personal tax obligations separate from the provider-fee comparison. A fee omitted from an advertisement is not evidence that it is zero.
One-Time Purchases and Subscriptions Are Different
For a one-time evaluation, record the initial purchase and any additional attempts you choose to buy. For a subscription, also record every renewal you expect to incur. A failed account does not necessarily stop recurring billing.
For example, TakeProfitTrader's Trading Tests renew monthly. Breaking a rule does not cancel the subscription, and buying a reset does not move the renewal date. Passing ends the test subscription automatically. These rules belong to its Trading Test product; they should not be generalized to every firm. Official TakeProfitTrader subscription rules.
Tradeify's current Futures products use one-time purchases. Its documentation separately notes that subscriptions opened before Tradeify 3.0 can remain active until canceled. This distinction matters when comparing a new purchase with an older account you already hold. Official Tradeify FAQ.
Before buying, write down the next billing date, cancellation process, and which charges a failed attempt leaves active. Keep the checkout confirmation and the terms that applied to your purchase.
Resets Are Optional Purchases, Not an Expected Pass Rate
There is no universal number of attempts a trader needs. Do not treat a budget with three resets as a prediction, and do not assume every plan offers resets.
Compare a paid reset with a replacement evaluation using the current checkout price and the applicable rules. A cheaper new evaluation may have different eligibility, drawdown, or payout conditions. A reset may preserve an existing subscription's renewal schedule rather than starting a new billing period.
Use several scenarios: no additional attempts, one extra attempt, and a maximum spending limit you are willing to accept. Practice against the chosen plan's rules before buying, and stop purchasing attempts when your budget is reached.
Activation Does Not Necessarily Mean Live Trading
Check whether the next stage is simulated funded, LiveSim, or a live account. Activation fees and account labels vary by product, and live transitions can have separate eligibility requirements.
Tradeify states that its Growth, Select, and Lightning accounts have no activation fee, and distinguishes Sim Funded accounts from live accounts. That is a statement about those named products, not a guarantee that every current or future plan at every firm has the same arrangement. Official Tradeify account information.
A fee deducted from a payout still affects your total cost, even though you do not pay it at checkout. Earn2Trade currently specifies a $139 activation deduction from a non-professional LiveSim trader's first profitable withdrawal. Its rules differ for professional and live accounts. Official Earn2Trade funded-account fees.
Data and Trading Charges Can Continue After Evaluation
Do not assume a funded account includes every platform or data service. Check your exchange selections, data level, professional classification, and the account stage you expect to use.
Earn2Trade, for example, covers evaluation data for non-professionals but documents monthly exchange-data charges for professional LiveSim and live accounts. It also lists trading commissions and exchange/NFA charges. This illustrates why a universal “no data fees once funded” claim is inaccurate. Official fee structure.
Separate cash paid to the provider from commissions deducted from trading results. Avoid counting the same charge twice when a dashboard already reports net profit.
A Worked Budget: Clearly Hypothetical Prices
Suppose an evaluation costs $40, each additional attempt costs $100, and activation costs $140. These are invented inputs for explaining the calculation, not current quotes for any firm.
| Scenario | Calculation | Cost before any recurring or trading charges |
|---|---|---|
| No extra attempts | $40 + $140 | $180 |
| One extra attempt | $40 + $100 + $140 | $280 |
| Three extra attempts | $40 + (3 × $100) + $140 | $480 |
For a separate subscription example, assume a $40 introductory month, two $80 renewals, one $100 reset, and $140 activation. The cost is $40 + (2 × $80) + $100 + $140 = $440. If the renewal includes the reset you use, remove the separate $100 charge instead of counting it twice.
These examples show how different assumptions change the budget. They do not estimate your likelihood of passing, promise a payout, or establish that a particular account is worth purchasing.
Find Current Prices for the Exact Plan
Use the account listings to compare the selected size and plan, then confirm the final amount and eligibility at the provider's checkout.
| Comparison task | Where to start |
|---|---|
| Compare $50K offers | Current $50K account listings |
| Compare plans and their activation costs | Account comparison |
| Check codes and offer conditions | Discounts and promo codes |
| Compare evaluation and funded stages | Evaluation versus funded comparison |
| Browse no-evaluation products | Instant-funding futures firms |
A percentage discount can apply only to particular plans, the first purchase or first few purchases, or a specific billing period. A public sale code and an affiliate code can have different conditions. An offer without a published end date should not be treated as guaranteed to remain available.
Make a Purchase Decision Using the Full Agreement
Before paying, confirm:
- The exact product name, size, platform, and account stage.
- Today's eligible checkout price and any repeat-purchase restrictions.
- Renewal timing, cancellation requirements, and the cost of another attempt.
- Activation, market-data, platform, trading, and payout charges.
- Drawdown, consistency, profitable-day, and withdrawal rules that could affect your ability to use the account.
- A personal spending limit that does not depend on earning a future payout.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the true total cost of a prop firm account?
Add the exact plan’s purchase price, renewals, optional resets or replacement attempts, activation, and any platform, data, trading or payout charges. Separate upfront payments from fees deducted at withdrawal. The total depends on the selected product and your own scenario; there is no universal budget or guaranteed number of attempts.
Why do some prop firms charge activation fees?
Activation is a plan-specific charge for entering the next account stage. That stage may be simulated funded or live, so the fee does not prove that live capital is being provided. Check the selected plan for the amount, waiver conditions, and whether payment is upfront or deducted from a payout.
How many resets should I budget for as a new trader?
There is no verified universal number of resets needed to pass. Compare a zero-reset scenario, one extra attempt, and your own maximum budget. Not every plan offers resets, and purchasing a reset may leave an existing subscription’s renewal date unchanged.
Are there prop firms with no hidden fees?
Look for a complete fee schedule for the exact product rather than a firm-wide no-fee claim. No activation fee does not automatically mean no renewals, data fees, commissions or optional platform charges. Confirm each cost and its billing trigger before purchasing.
How can I minimize my total prop firm costs?
Practice against the plan’s rules, compare the full cost rather than only the discount percentage, confirm renewal and cancellation terms, and set a maximum spending limit. Verify a code’s eligibility and repeat-purchase conditions at checkout. A lower entry fee does not guarantee the best overall account or a future payout.
